- Bishop Smith Blesses Bell

Bishop Michael Smith, Bishop of Meath, blessed two new arrivals to

St. John the Baptist Church Rath after confirmation, on Friday 9th March.

Fr John Moorhead PP said that the bell was taken down to make room for

a car park, in 1994, and for safety and bad timbers, which were showing

signs of their age at that time. 'I promised the community that it would be

re-used, not sold. We have made good on this promise, by making a fine

iron stand, made by Richard Watkins, a craftsman from the parish, and

bringing the Bell inside the church. Congratulations to all involved,' he said.

The Bishop also blessed a new Reredos. When the Church was being renov

-ated in 1994, money was scarce, and I was aware that something needed

to be done to the Sanctuary. The Tabernacle was too stoney and plain, not

prayerful enough. I asked the parish many times what we should do, and we

finally settled on a design of James Grennan, which the Parish Council all

loved. We approached Brian Gath, local craftsman, to make a piece, tongue

and grooved, in Walnut, Oak and Maple, supported on a marine ply base, to

be suspended. Aidan Spain fitted the lights, again a skilled man from the

parish was used. The idea was conceived by James Grennan, who is studying

architecture.'

The Parish received two bequests which allowed us to think on this scale

and quality. Many thanks to those families,' he added.
